چکیده

ATM Block Transfer (ABT) is promising for effectively transferring highly bursty data traffic in ATM networks. We develop an approximate analysis for two types of ABT (ABT/DT and ABT/IT) to discuss performance comparisons of ABT/IT and DT. Through numerical examples, we show that ABT/DT is quite sensitive to propagation delays while ABT/IT is not. We next investigate the performance improvement by dynamic bandwidth negotiation, which is applicable to ABT/DT. Bandwidth reduction methods in both of ABT/DT and IT are also examined. Simulation results show that the bandwidth negotiation can improve the performance of ABT/DT, and that in the case of short propagation delays, it outperforms even ABT/IT in terms of throughput. However, it is obtained at the expense of the increased burst transmission times. On the other hand, the bandwidth reduction allows a flexible use of the bandwidth, leading fairly good performance in all parameter regions.

Buffer reservation for TCP over ATM networks

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) has already been a widely used protocol in many networks. Recent studies show that the performance of TCP over ATM networks is severely degraded. In this paper, we propose to apply the buffer reservation technique on TCP traffic over ATM networks. While the ATM block transfer (ABT) method (Boyer, 1992) is to reserve bandwidth for bursts of cells, our proposed...

M1, M2, ..., Mk/G1, G2,..., Gk/l/N Queue with Buffer Division and Push-Out Schemes for ATM Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper, loss probabilities and steady state probabilities of data packets for an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network are investigated under the buffer division and push-out schemes. Data packets are classified in classes k which arrive in Poisson fashion to the service facility and are served with general service rate under buffer division scheme, finite buffer space N is divided in...

Improve HTTP/TCP Performance over ATM Networks: New Schemes and Performance Comparisons

This paper proposes a "selective packet retransmission " scheme for improving H7TF'CP performance when transmitting through ATM networks. In selective packet retransmission, we utilize the property of humank perception tolerance for errors to detennine whether to retransmit a corrupted TCP segment or not. For lossable data, such as imagt.. when error occurs because of cell lost, it will not be ...

A case for dynamic sender-based reservations in the Internet

In this paper we discuss the need for resource reservation in the Internet and examine some of the strengths and weaknesses of RSVP, which is currently the most popular of Internet reservation protocols that have been developed. We also discuss some alternative reservation protocols for packet networks, in particular the ATM Block Transfer(ABT) reservation protocol that has been designed for us...

An ABT based ABR service for ATM

We propose a new variant of the ATM Block Transfer Capability, called ABT/VT, that provides an available bit rate service, allowing applications with vague delay and bandwidth requirements to exploit otherwise unused network resources in a dynamic and eecient way. Our scheme diiers from previous ones in its use of a soft state approach, by which reservations have a time to live. It is designed ...
